DESCRIPTION: EPW - Charles Frodsham, 84 Strand, London, keyless pocket chronometer with spring detent escapement, free-sprung balance with extremely unusual hairspring having a triple overcoil, 56mm, massive 18K gold original HC with engraved initial monogram to front and family crest to rear, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS with setting lever pressed inward and held while crown is turned, spring detent escapement with capped escape wheel, free-sprung balance with diamond endstone and triple overcoil hairspring, 20-21J, gilt mvt, s#04144 with matching serial number to dial and within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 120.8 dwt (188.0 g). A truly exceptional piece for the pocket chronometer collector, both for its enormously heavy gold case and for its extremely unusual hairspring having a triple overcoil which gives it an initial visual impression almost as being two hairsprings stacked atop one another.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, scattered micro-fine scratches; dial with light hl from 3 to upper edge of seconds-register, group of small faint hls below seconds-register near 6; nearly mint hands; case shows very little wear, few negligible pinpoint nicks, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail, rear and cuvette open short of 90 degrees (to approximately 80 degrees and 70 degrees, respectively); tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $7000 - $10000
